Triangle Pose

Trikonasana: gina anne

How do you get yourself into a triangle? Give yoga a try. ūüôā

In yoga class I adore triangle pose (trikonasana), there is so much lengthening in the limbs, opening the heart, grounding in the feet. I love teaching triangle in class as well. Holding the class in this grounding extension. Arms fly high and ease fills the studio.

I chose this pose for spring because triangle pose is fun, open, slightly detoxifying and springy. Triangle pose gets the name because two triangles are made with the arms and legs. We are working the front leg’s hamstrings and the back leg’s gluteus. The spine twists slightly and the arms extend freely one down to the ground while the other yearns¬†for¬†the sky.

“If you were a triangle, you’d be acute one!” -unknown

Feeling springy? Put on some airy tunes &¬†let’s get into triangle. Start in downward facing dog. Step your right foot forward, spin the back foot down. Rise¬†into warrior II pose. Straighten the front leg, hips move back, right arm moves forward, yes…now tilt into triangle pose. Left hand to the sky. Gaze at your foot, to the side, or for full expression rotate your head. Set the focus on the top hand. Five deep breaths here. Inhale…Exhale! In & out…breathe sweet. Three more breaths. Relax, tranquil, serene.

Notice how the¬†feet ground into the earth, feeling lines of energy up through the knees stretching into deeper movement in the legs and hips. The spine twists kindly amidst¬†the thoracic¬†back. Open the heart space to the side, shine some light, dance to the music. Detoxify through the core…intestines, liver, pancreas twisting, squeezing, massaging. The arms are open, fun, and free like a bird in flight. One more deep breath in, exhale the arm down to the floor. Stepping back to downward facing dog. Bend the knees to the floor, head rests down. Another breath.

Bring gratitude to the physical body for being such a gift of movement and feeling. Compassion to the mind for being able to focus on breathe. Getting yourself into triangle is a joy, a blessing, a gift…and this is why I chose it for¬†spring beginnings.

be you. be kind. breathe sweet.

Ujjayi Breath

Ujjayi: gina anne

Ujjayi, WHAT?

Ocean waves, see-saw effect, soft whisper, hissing, Darth Vader breath…giggles vibrate the yoga studio. What is an ujjayi breath? New to yoga, ujjayi is quite¬†the foreign word. It is Sanskrit meaning “victorious breath.” Mastering the breath. Staying in the moment with breathing. The breath, the respiratory system, the lungs flowing of oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide, is the only autonomic¬†system we can control.

What is an ujjayi breath? Ujjayi breathing is a slow, rhythmic breath used in most yoga classes. The breath is done in and out of the nostrils. The inhale is victorious, full and vibrant. The exhale is cleansing, and audible from air tickling the vocal cords. A gentle breath which brings awareness to our inhalations and exhalations. A conscious breath to allow mindfulness, self care, and hyper¬†awareness to the body, the outside environment. Traffic jams, chaos, tension… when and wherever life needs to slow down and breathe sweet. Ujjayi breathing slows the heart rate, calms the mind, decreases blood pressure, releases cortisol (stress hormone) and brings heat to the body.

“Tread softly, breathe peacefully, laugh hysterically.” -Nelson Mandela

Why do we do this Darth Vader breathing in yoga classes? Not only to release stress, but from my experience when I concentrate on my ujjayi breath it helps me to focus and experience peace. I am able to stay in a balance pose. Be strong in a warrior pose. Relax in a restorative pose. Be present in my body & relax the anxiety in my mind. Most of all bringing attention and awareness to my own yoga practice and my own yoga teaching.

Sit back relax. Take a DEEEEP belly breathe in through the nose. Hold 1-2-3… and out through the nose saying the word haaaaaa…fogging up a mirror, hold 1-2-3! Do this 3 or 4 times and see how you feel more victorious.¬†Then allow the breath to go back on autopilot, enjoying your day.

Be you. Be kind. Breathe Sweet.

The Beauty of Massage

Hibiscus Oil: gina anne

MASSAGE IS BEAUTIFUL!

The beauty of massage is just that…beautiful.¬†Massage is very important and extremely beneficial to our health & wellness. In this busy, crazy, over polluted, over processed, over stimulated¬†world massage can calm us from a¬†go – go – go mentality. Put on the brakes, stop, TAKE A DEEP BREATH, and breathe sweet. Ahhhh, better.¬†Through massage we can learn to relax, calm down, and take away the stress¬†from this busy life.

The beauty of massage brings the stress levels down, and the calm levels up. As soon as you swing through the spa doors the relaxation starts. The whole experience starts with the ambiance. The calming aroma of a honey lavender candle may hit your nose, some warm tea is offered to relax you further. Then, the gentle voice of the massage therapist will greet you putting your nerves at ease. The lights are low, the music is serene. Already, before the body is even on the warm table your nervous system is relaxing, letting go, calming down.

“Every body, deserves a massage.” -anonymous

During the massage, the¬†hand to skin contact feels amazing increasing feel good endorphins & radiating warmth to the skin. The muscles start to melt like chocolate. The circulatory system increases…out with the old blood, in with the new. The lymphatic systems begins to release toxins and healthy nutrients start¬†to travel throughout the body. TAKE A DEEP RELAXING BREATH. Ahhhh, the lungs thank you. Ôāä Along with all the physical benefits, the mind soaks in the beauty of massage as well… the mind¬†lets go of chaos and expands in creativity.

The beauty of massage lasts well beyond the treatment service as well. So, let’s celebrate in beauty and book a massage as soon as possible.¬†Celebrate your body and get a massage. Enjoy!

Be you. Be kind. Breathe Sweet.
