Grapefruit Infused Water

Grapefruit Water: gina anne

Grapefruit Infused Water – Spring Fling!

I came up with this yummy spring fling concoction…grapefruit water, with blood oranges, and mint leaves. Some say fruit infused water is detox water. I say it’s sipping water with fruit dancing around with all the chunks of ice. Sure, you could drink this solely and call it a detox. But, let’s get hydrated. The fruit slowly infuses out into the water adding a hint of sweetness to the mixture. What do you say? Detox water or infused water.

Every spa I have worked at usually puts fruit in the water for an esthetic appeal. Guests love fruit in their water. The pitcher looks pretty, the water is cold, and the fruit is colorful. I was pondering after my ‘hello spring’ post of a light cleanse I could do this weekend. I am not in the mood to do a serious cleanse where I only drink juice for three days. I am in the mood for something easy and light. Hence, I chose grapefruit soaked water.

“I am a grateful…grapefruit!” -Bjork

I also added a blood orange because it looked very appealing at the grocery store. Some mint leaves to throw off my taste buds. And, going back to the esthetic appeal. The green looks springy in my water. Plus, the mint worked as expected, tastes great in the water.

The best thing about this water is cutting up the fruit and smelling the citrus aromas, the mint is yummy as well. Grapefruit is rich in antioxidants which fights free radicals. High in lycopene and fights cancer cells. The aroma of grapefruit increases dopamine levels in the brain which makes us feel happy, cheery, sweet. Perfect way to reenergize this first week of spring.

Grab your favorite pitcher fill it half way with ice. Cut up the grapefruit and blood oranges in half, don’t forget to take a deep breathe. Inhale the sweetness & exhale breathing sweet. 😉 Then, slice a couple of citrus wheels. Cut the wheels in four pieces like a pie. I only used 1/2 of a grapefruit & 1/2 of a blood orange. Place in the pitcher. Pinch off some mint leaves toss those in for added bonus. Fill with purified water. Place in fridge. Wait about a half hour to allow the infusion process to dance on. Fill up a tall glass of water & enjoy your grapefruit infused spring fling water concoction. Cheers!

be you. be kind. breathe sweet.

Hello Spring.

Hello Spring: gina anne

Hello Spring.

Spring is here. The birds are singing. Wildlife is active. Flowers are peaking through the desolate winter’s earth. The sunshine is stretching his rays through this chilly Wisconsin morning. I start my day with a mile walk with our pup, Winston. He is not really a puppy any more. He is one year & 2 months. Exactly, a year ago Andy and I picked up this sweet boy. Our walk is brisk, with a slight chill, normal for Wisconsin March. Winston’s snout notices the spring ground, sniffing for scraps. Spring is in his step. Robins are everywhere searching for breakfast. Squirrels recovering fall’s hidden treasures. The earth is muddy and brown, regrowth is happening.

“Spring, is nature’s way of saying…Let’s Party!” -Robin Williams

Spring, where the days become longer. A positive hope for warmer weather ahead. We spring clean, spring detox. Make life lighter, shedding our winter coat. Finding our own regrowth. Our inner spring step.

What do you do when spring is in the air?

I usually have plans to clean, detox, set some regrowth myself, on life ahead. Spring came all too fast for me. I still have yet to do a deep cleaning, hopefully soon. I do have four months of spring, right? To de-clutter, detox and cleanse the air. I enjoy clearing my closet every spring, storing my winter clothes…a fickle Wisconsin spring is quite hard to let go of those cozy sweaters though. What are your spring goals?

here are some of mine:

  • do a thorough deep cleaning, get rid of the old
  • organize my closet (my goal is to have a capsule closet) this has been my goal for 3 years now…still a work in progress. Very challenging. Very funny.
  • be more creative
  • do a 3 day juice cleanse
  • more evening walks
  • oh, and have I mentioned triathlon training? Eeeek!

Can’t wait to hear what is in your spring step. Happy spring to everyone. Let me know your spring rituals. Add some advice on how you spring clean your home, your body, & your soul. Enjoy!

be you. be kind. breathe sweet.

The Vitamin C – Craze

Oranges: gina anne

The Vitamin C – Craze, What’s it all About?

I always imagine lots of oranges when I hear the word vitamin C. Drinking a big glass of freshly squeezed oranges is how I imagine intaking a healthy dose of this lovely vitamin.

First off, what is vitamin C and where does it come from. Vitamin C is a nutrient which is good for our health and well being. Vitamin C comes from the land of fruits. Some fruits and vegetables have higher vitamin C content than the citrus family. Peppers, dark leafy greens, strawberries, kiwis, brussel sprouts and papayas to name a few.

Second, why is vitamin C good for my skin. Vitamin C repairs tissues. When applied to the face vitamin C acts as an antioxidant which fights free radicals. Vitamin C repairs and regenerates the skin. It can reduce the appearance of dark spots. Also, helping with collagen synthesis.

“Mimosas are a good source of vitamin C” -unknown

Third, how can you add vitamin C to your day. Vitamin C can be added into the diet. Make daily smoothies, drink hand squeezed juices, eat more salads. Be creative with your diet, have fun. Smile. Breathe Sweet. Yum!

Lastly, vitamin C is very popular in skin care products. When I first became an esthetician products with vitamin C became the craze. Everyone seemed to use it. Vitamin C is probably one of the most popular questions I get in the spa, during my facial treatments.

A lot of products contain vitamin C. The best way to see results in the face would be to use a serum with vitamin C. Serums penetrate a little deeper into the skin than a moisturizer will. But, your diet is going to be the BEST way to gain the benefits of receiving vitamin C. So go grab yourself an orange, take a deep breath, breathe sweet & enjoy!

Be you. Be kind. Breathe Sweet.

Favorite Vitamin C Smoothie: 1 yellow bell pepper, 1 kiwi, handful of strawberries, 3 peeled cuties, some spinach, and 1/2 cup grapefruit juice from a fresh grapefruit. Blend in blender. Pour in a fun glass, cheers!

Why I Love Body Butter!

Body Butter: gina anne

Why I love body butter!

NOOO, not that kind of butter, body butter! I remember way back in junior high using my first body butter from The Body Shop. I loved going there rummaging through all the testers, smelling the yummy goodness. I bought strawberry and lathered it on every day until it ran out. I was young, my skin was young, my body was well hydrated. I probably put too much on because I remember feeling creamy, the butter slipping off my skin in the sun. I loved it. This was my very first introduction to ‘good’ ingredients and non-animal testing. My heart swooned. I tried every butter from here, loving the girls dressed in black asking me, “Have you tried this one, yet?”

Jump ahead some years and yep, still a sucker for body butters. I apply butter on my skin every day before I get dressed. Body butters are thicker and creamier than a lotion. Like frosting. Usually containing Shea, coconuts, or olives. In the past I collected an assortment of flavors. Now, I’m trying to do this minimalist thing, and only buy what I need (at times). So, one butter instead of say, three…unless there’s a special. 😉 wink!

“Butter my butt, and call me a biscuit.” -southern phrase

I used L’Bri’s Mandarin Fig Body Butter for a long time…Amazing. I ran out. Conveniently, my girlfriend was having a Perfectly Posh party. I pondered to try something new. I tried my aunt’s Posh butter, then went home sifted through the website. Deciding on Snuggle Buddy Skin Joy from my friend’s party…I LOVE IT!!! I love the aroma. I lust the name. I love the kitties on the label. AND… it’s pure joy…skin joy. Snuggle Buddy Skin Joy

Body butters make my skin feel as if I drank a carafe of water. I feel young, flirty, and happy when I lather on my butter. I massage the butter from my ankles to my neck, thighs, arms, belly, bosom, and buttocks. YES! This morning or evening ritual wakes me up, lifts me up, and puts a smile on my face. I especially use extra butter in the winter and dryer times. Or after a long sun-kissed day. So, hurry up grab yourself a body butter and find the love I have for butters. Enjoy!

be you. be kind. breathe sweet.

Ujjayi Breath

Ujjayi: gina anne

Ujjayi, WHAT?

Ocean waves, see-saw effect, soft whisper, hissing, Darth Vader breath…giggles vibrate the yoga studio. What is an ujjayi breath? New to yoga, ujjayi is quite the foreign word. It is Sanskrit meaning “victorious breath.” Mastering the breath. Staying in the moment with breathing. The breath, the respiratory system, the lungs flowing of oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide, is the only autonomic system we can control.

What is an ujjayi breath? Ujjayi breathing is a slow, rhythmic breath used in most yoga classes. The breath is done in and out of the nostrils. The inhale is victorious, full and vibrant. The exhale is cleansing, and audible from air tickling the vocal cords. A gentle breath which brings awareness to our inhalations and exhalations. A conscious breath to allow mindfulness, self care, and hyper awareness to the body, the outside environment. Traffic jams, chaos, tension… when and wherever life needs to slow down and breathe sweet. Ujjayi breathing slows the heart rate, calms the mind, decreases blood pressure, releases cortisol (stress hormone) and brings heat to the body.

“Tread softly, breathe peacefully, laugh hysterically.” -Nelson Mandela

Why do we do this Darth Vader breathing in yoga classes? Not only to release stress, but from my experience when I concentrate on my ujjayi breath it helps me to focus and experience peace. I am able to stay in a balance pose. Be strong in a warrior pose. Relax in a restorative pose. Be present in my body & relax the anxiety in my mind. Most of all bringing attention and awareness to my own yoga practice and my own yoga teaching.

Sit back relax. Take a DEEEEP belly breathe in through the nose. Hold 1-2-3… and out through the nose saying the word haaaaaa…fogging up a mirror, hold 1-2-3! Do this 3 or 4 times and see how you feel more victorious. Then allow the breath to go back on autopilot, enjoying your day.

Be you. Be kind. Breathe Sweet.
